Bite 1: The Empire State Building

Bite 1: The Empire State Building
Status: Bitten
Recommendation summary: 7 bites (out of 10)

Dear New York Lovers,

We took our first bite of the Big Apple last night at the Empire State Building. The experience was great and totally worth it! Once you are up there you know this is the tallest building in NYC. Going at night turned out to be a great idea because you see the whole city lit up and it's not overly crowded. However, be aware that when it is chilly in the streets, it is freezing up at the top - so dress accordingly if you are going during the colder seasons.

Another visitor tip is that paying $42 to go to the 102nd floor is not really worth it as the view from there is not much different than the view from the 86th, which only costs $25. Further, you can only go outside from the 86th floor. That being said we did get a cool pic going from 86 to 102. :)

Fun facts:
  • The Empire State Building was the tallest building in the world between 1931 and 1972.
  • It is currently the tallest building in NYC.
  • The spikes on the top of some of the skyscrapers were installed there with the intention of serving as parking spots for hot air balloons. The intention was to travel from building to building with a hot air balloon and just tie those balloons on the spikes at the top of the sky scrapers. The plan was scrapped after one trial that showed that this idea was crazy because of the winds.
Also, as a part of our bucket list activities we have committed to figure out why NYC is referred to as The Big Apple, without using google! Therefore, at each stop we are asking strangers as to what they think.

Current account:
  • Waiter at Heartland Brewery: "I have no idea, people in the city like apples?" - not winning
  • Security guard at the Empire State: "I have no idea, but once you go to the top maybe you will discover it looks like an apple" - nice try, but no it does not
  • Jazz musician performing at the top of the building: "Does anyone know?? Hm, let's see.. NYC used to be a huge apple farm field and a big producers of apples.. This seems plausible, no?" - So far the most plausible story but unconfirmed

And that's it for now, New York Lovers! Stay tuned for our next Bite and recap!

Love,
